Why can’t my child sit still at school?

Many children struggle to sit still in the classroom, and it doesn’t always mean they are “naughty” or not trying. Difficulty sitting still can be linked to a range of underlying factors such as sensory processing differences, attention challenges, anxiety, developmental delays, or simply needing more movement than the classroom allows. Some children find it hard to filter noise, focus for long periods, or regulate their energy levels in structured environments.

An Occupational Therapist looks at the whole child — not just the behaviour — to understand what is making sitting still difficult. Through assessment and therapy, we can identify whether your child needs sensory support, movement breaks, or strategies to improve focus, self-regulation, and classroom participation.

If you’re concerned about your child’s ability to sit still, concentrate, or cope in the classroom, early support can make a big difference in their confidence and learning success.
